A company’s music on hold and on hold message can do so much more than occupy a caller’s time. Sometimes, they turn into a great story.
When New York Post’s Kevin Kernan called Peter Greenberg and Associates for an update on New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes free agency status, the sports writer might have gotten all the answers he needed before anyone came on the line.
To his surprise, their on hold music was Reyes singing his recently released song “No Hay Amigo,” translated “There are no friends.”
Reyes is unhappy with the Mets, and this was one way for him to let someone know. According to Kernan’s story, it looks like Florida could be Reyes’ new home as he gets friendly with the Marlins.
What’s the lesson here? People will be put on hold, and when they are, they will hear the music on hold and on hold message you deliver. Here are three ways to be strategic with these tools.
Make your best pitch. By the time callers dial your number, chances are they have done a lot already. They are a hot prospect. Show them you are a big-league player by knocking it out the park the perfect music on hold – maybe a song featuring a relevant weather topic: “I Got Sunshine on a Cloudy Day” to give your callers a smile on a stormy day.
Be deliberate with your message. Reyes and his agent knew reporters would be calling. They knew the Mets would be calling. They knew other teams would be calling. And they knew exactly what they wanted everyone to hear. Their on hold message was right on target!
Pay attention to the details. In Reyes’ case, the music on hold WAS the message. But for many businesses, music or a single message alone won’t cut it on hold. Does your music and message blend in a way that reflects the culture and personality of your business? Do you update your message to spotlight your latest accomplishments, current deals or seasonal events? It takes some thought, but creativity in your music on hold and on hold message will pay off.
Your on-hold marketing campaign is the perfect opportunity to step up to the plate. With On Hold Company on your team, you can knock it out of the park every time.
Don’t worry, you are among friends here.
